The Ministry of Natural Resources, with the support of the Fisheries Management Zone 10 Advisory Council, has developed a strategy to manage Lake Trout in Zone 10. Based on the comments received during a public meeting in the spring of 2009, recommendations of the Fisheries Advisory Council and the best available science, the ministry has developed new fishing regulations for Lake Trout in Zone 10 Yellow Perch on Manitoulin Island and Walleye in the French River. These regulations will be put into effect for 2010 to improve fish populations as well as increase angling and recreational and economic opportunities in Zone 10.

Manitoulin Island has a warmer climate (growing degree days), different geology (limestone vs. shield), and ultimately much higher aquatic productivity than the rest of Zone 10.

It has the only limestone based Lake Trout lake in Zone 10, and one of only two limestone based Lake Trout lakes in the province.
Lakes on Manitoulin Island are unique among Zone 10 lake trout lakes and warrant special consideration. The regulation changes for the waters of Manitoulin Island include a reduction from three to two Lake Trout for a sport fish license, with no size restriction and the open season will remain January 1 to September 30 in 2010.

Yellow perch is also a very important sport fish but recent information suggests that exploitation is threatening the sustainability of the Yellow Perch fisheries on Manitoulin Island.

A new open season from January 1 to March 31 and the third Saturday in May to December 31 should reduce the harvest of larger spawning size Yellow Perch, and allow this component of the fishery to rebuild.

Information extracted from Minstry of Natural Resources

There are 545 km of groomed, signed trails reaching all areas of the Manitoulin, which tie into the provincial trail plan.
The Ontario Federation of Snowmobile Clubs (OFSC) honoured Manitoulin Snowdusters in 2001 by awarding them the honour of Club of the Year for 2001. The award is given out annually to recognize exceptional effort and achievements of the possible 270 plus clubs who are eligible for this award.

Canada Receives Approved Destination Status from China
Canadian tourism industry applauds vital and historic announcement

OTTAWA, ON, December 3, 2009 ─ In an announcement of great significance to Canada’s tourism sector, Prime Minister Stephen Harper announced today that China has granted Approved Destination Status to Canada.
This agreement will allow Chinese citizens to more easily obtain tourist visas to travel to Canada for leisure purposes, and will allow Canada to actively market its tourism products in China. The ADS agreement will also authorize Chinese travel agencies to market and promote leisure group tours for travel in Canada.
“This is a vital and historic announcement for Canada’s tourism industry,” said Randy Williams, President and CEO of the Tourism Industry Association of Canada. “The Approved Destination Status agreement with China will allow Canada’s tourism industry to tap into the world’s most significant emerging outbound tourism market, and will provide us with greater opportunities to grow our businesses while sharing all that Canada has to offer with our friends in China.”
TIAC had highlighted the urgent need for an ADS agreement with China in The Report on Canada’s Tourism Competitiveness in June of 2008, and had raised the need for such an agreement for several years previous. TIAC also raised this issue directly at a meeting the Prime Minister in June of 2009, urging him to visit China and come to an agreement on this file as soon as possible.
By 2020, China is expected to be the world’s largest outbound market, producing some 100 million outbound tourists. With an emerging middle class that is increasingly looking to spend its disposable income on travel and tourism, there is a tremendous opportunity for Canada to attract a significant flow of visitors across the Pacific.
The Conference Board of Canada estimates that an Approved Destination Status agreement will increase the annual rate of travel to Canada from China by as much as 50 per cent by 2015.
“TIAC sincerely appreciates the good work done by the government and the relevant departments to finalize this important agreement for our sector’s competitiveness,” said Williams. “In particular, we would like to acknowledge the Prime Minister, the Minister of State for Tourism, Diane Ablonczy, and the Minister of International Trade Stockwell Day, for their determination in moving this file forward at a critical juncture in the development of Canada’s tourism industry.”
TIAC looks forward to working with the government and all stakeholders in the development of China ADS policies and processes so that our sector can capitalize on this monumental opportunity.

The Manitoulin Tourism (MTA) is a not-for-profit organization committed to promoting Manitoulin Island and Area Tourism. It is in it’s 57th year of service and continues to work hand in hand with all groups, organizations, and government agencies.
The MTA is a reservation agent for the Owen Sound Transportation Commission (OSTC) and the Chi-Cheemaun ferry, and leases the property and covers the liability insurance for the property owners of the Cup and Saucer Biosphere Foundation. The MTA also continues to offer the Mississagi Lighthouse attraction for the west end of our Island by maintaining a lease with the Coast Guard.
The MTA also maintains partnerships with the Great Spirit Circle Trail (GSCT), the Owen Sound Transporation Commission (OSTC), the Georgain Bay Coastal Route (GBCR), Georgian Bay Destination Development Partnership (GBDDP), and the Rainbow Country Travel Association (RCTA).
Through statistical analysis it has been determined that 70% of all income generated on Manitoulin comes from tourism. It is the goal of the MTA to continue to increase business to our members and the industry as a whole.

The MTA staffs and operates the Manitoulin Welcome Center in Little Current which serves 30,000-35,000 visitors each season from May to October. Staff are instructed and trained to promote the members’ establishments when assisting customers, and will contact members when their brochures are running low.
Each brochure and pamphlet is prominently displayed on membership racks in the Welcome Centre. Although the MTA serves as a main depot for areas to stock brochures, they are also sent weekly to the Chi-Cheemaun, Tobermory, and South Bay Mouth terminal buildings, Manitowaning, Mindemoya, Gore Bay, and the Sudbury Welcome Centre . Many members also stock their offices brochures from our centre and help promote the area.

The MTA also provides brochures in direct mailing packages sent to people planning to travel in the area–with each package tailored to the individual request.

Food service members are also invited to send their menus to the Welcome Center for placement on the ever so popular “Island Eateries” board, and can also look forward to seeing their events posted by staff n the “What’s Doin” on the Manitoulin Travel Associations bulletin board which is located in the lobby of the Welcome Centre and constantly updated.

As a member one can also look forward to having their contact information listed on the MTA website, as well as receive discounts on Ad spaces owned by the MTA located at the Welcome Centre, the arena in Little Current, and the Spider Bay Marina. Each member is able to also sit in on board meetings and committees to add their voice to decisions made on behalf of the industry.

Aside from the reasons mentioned above, being a member of the MTA says you not only support excellent service standards, but that you also support your community.

It is said that a whopping 70% of all income earned on Manitoulin Island is generated through tourism ventures. Originally a railway-only bridge, the bridge stayed in the open position at all times except when a train needed to pass.
Passenger Traffic to the island was available only by ferry until 1946, when the bridge was improved to allow both rail and vehicle traffic.
