New Fishing Regulations for 2010

The Ministry of Natural Resources, with the support of the Fisheries Management Zone 10 Advisory Council, has developed a strategy to manage Lake Trout in Zone 10. Based on the comments received during a public meeting in the spring of 2009, recommendations of the Fisheries Advisory Council and the best available science, the ministry has developed new fishing regulations for Lake Trout in Zone 10 Yellow Perch on Manitoulin Island and Walleye in the French River. These regulations will be put into effect for 2010 to improve fish populations as well as increase angling and recreational and economic opportunities in Zone 10.
Manitoulin Island has a warmer climate (growing degree days), different geology (limestone vs. shield), and ultimately much higher aquatic productivity than the rest of Zone 10.
It has the only limestone based Lake Trout lake in Zone 10, and one of only two limestone based Lake Trout lakes in the province.
Lakes on Manitoulin Island are unique among Zone 10 lake trout lakes and warrant special consideration. The regulation changes for the waters of Manitoulin Island include a reduction from three to two Lake Trout for a sport fish license, with no size restriction and the open season will remain January 1 to September 30 in 2010.
Yellow perch is also a very important sport fish but recent information suggests that exploitation is threatening the sustainability of the Yellow Perch fisheries on Manitoulin Island.
A new open season from January 1 to March 31 and the third Saturday in May to December 31 should reduce the harvest of larger spawning size Yellow Perch, and allow this component of the fishery to rebuild.
